Metrology Engineer

Job Description

1. Accountable to operate and manage the Measurement System Analysis process for each measurement system requested and deployed within the aircraft  program:

  • Analyze incoming requests for Measurement Systems
  • Assist with defining the Measurement System needed to fulfill the request requirements (for example: determine technique, methods, understanding sources of uncertainty).
  • Evaluating sources of uncertainty in a measurement system using the 5M management system (Man, Method, Means, Material, and Environment).
  • Design the Measurement Process.
  • Produce and/or assist in writing the work specification for acquisitions of new tooling.
  • Monitor development and test/validate the Measuring Equipment.
  • Coordinate the qualification of the Measurement System. A Measurement System Analysis (MSA) report shall be produced.
  • Achieve operational performance along the value chain of the process.
  • Ensure the documentation and guidance for all in service measurement systems is accurate and available for use by internal and external stakeholders to use, maintain and calibrate the equipment.

2. Operational/Process Activities

  • Ensure major updates and/or define & develop new measurement systems and processes according to the business process.
  • Consult the business on metrology issues.
  • Ensure adherence and measure process performance efficiency and effectiveness as per defined KPIs.
  • Propose changes to improve the process.
  • Resolve process non-conformances.
  • Contribute to process risk analysis management.
  • Conceptualize, specify and develop aircraft production process measurement tooling and equipment based on production needs.
  • Lead jigs & tools projects related or unrelated to measurement system requests.  
  • Provide necessary reporting for measurement system/jigs & tools project status within the FAL project team.
  • Provide technical expertise within the team to ensure project success through best practice application and knowledge of  processes.
  • Evaluate, specify and manage the modification of existing measurement equipment for adaptation to customer needs.
  • Fulfill as needed the role of Jigs & Tools Quality Engineer.
  • Complete training necessary to receive and maintain Quality Authorization for Jigs & Tools Quality.
  • Define Quality Assurance (QA) requirements in the technical specifications for Airbus custom tooling and equipment.
  • Coordinate QA measures with jigs & tools suppliers and monitor their implementation.
  • Participate in the pre-development phase in the creation of new production concepts.
  • Definition of test characteristics.
  • Comparison of new means of production with the requirements.
  • Carry out tests at the manufacturer.
  • Coordinating and conducting tests for the commissioning of production lines and assembly lines.
  • Acceptance testing of small-jigs.
  • Management of incoming tooling and organization of the receiving area.
  • Support 3D measurements with laser trackers on production systems.
  • Complaint/nonconformity management for the acceptance tests.
  • Documentation of quality assurance activities results.
  • Participation in supplier evaluation.
  • Troubleshooting (determination of causes of error, initiation and verification of remedial measures).

3.Additional Responsibilities:   

  • Other duties as assigned: 
  • Lead special projects assigned by the manager.
  • Support other departments as needed.
  • Is a technical expert to call for tender processes including contributing to creation of subcontract specifications and scope of work statements.
  • Provide subcontract advice and counsel to program managers, engineering personnel, and other related functions such as finance, quality and contract administration.
  • Responsible to track, follow-up and report on corrective action plans regarding service delivery.

Qualifications

  • Education: Degree in Metrology or a related technical field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing measurement systems.
  • 5 years of experience with measurement systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical certifications preferred.
  • OSHA certifications preferred.
  • Data analysis and presentation skills – ability to technically explain tooling/equipment issues.
  • Strong organization skills – able to oversee many ongoing topics.  Able to train others in these areas.
  • Knowledge of Metrology basics, autonomy in reading technical drawings, the geometric characteristics and their symbols i.p. datum and surface definitions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in 3D and 6D measurement systems (e.g. Laser Tracker; 3D Scanner;…) and standard measurement software (e.g. Spatial Analyzer; Metrolog; PolyWorks;…).
  • Able to develop, define and deploy complex measurement systems respecting metrological constraints and engineering requirements.
  • Able to consult Engineering on defining the requirements (tolerances; datum; etc.) based on manufacturing requirements and capabilities and support manufacturing on practical problem solving linked to measurement systems.
  • Able to transfer knowledge of the AIRBUS Business Processes (ABP) FU.IN.03.06 or equivalent to newcomers.
  • Flexibility to quickly shift priorities based on the needs of the FAL.
  • Capable to support/lead MFTs organized to solve complex technical issues.
  • Capable of managing complex topics with many stakeholders.  Strong communication and leadership skills to facilitate resolution of urgent maintenance topics.

  • Travel: <10% Domestic and International.
  • Capable to independently make complex technical decisions related to assigned projects.
  • Capable to lead recovery activities resulting from unplanned technical challenges.
  • Able to validate cost assessments and provide necessary justifications.
