POSITION SUMMARY
SEGULA Technologies is seeking an experienced Fire Protection and Process Safety Specialist to support fire protection engineering, process safety assessment and technical review activities for major industrial and hydrocarbon facilities.
The successful candidate will assess fire protection systems, fire and gas detection, emergency response provisions, hazard studies and process safety documentation. The role focuses on identifying and mitigating fire, explosion and hazardous-release risks while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, engineering standards and project requirements.
The position covers engineering reviews, risk assessment, multidisciplinary coordination, construction support, commissioning readiness and operational safety.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review fire protection and process safety design bases, engineering criteria, technical specifications and safety documentation.
- Assess firewater systems, including fire pumps, hydrants, monitors, hose reels, deluge systems and water-spray protection.
- Review fire and gas detection systems, including gas detectors, flame detectors, alarm arrangements and emergency interfaces.
- Evaluate LPG and hydrocarbon release scenarios, vapour-cloud formation, fire and explosion hazards, and potential escalation effects.
- Review fire-risk assessments, hazardous-area interfaces, separation distances and consequence-based design requirements.
- Assess passive fire protection, fireproofing, drainage, bunding, containment and emergency shutdown interfaces.
- Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), fire-risk assessments and consequence-analysis reviews.
- Review emergency response philosophies, evacuation provisions, fire protection strategies and emergency shutdown arrangements.
- Assess the adequacy of fire protection systems for storage tanks, process equipment, loading and offloading areas, and associated industrial infrastructure.
- Review technical specifications, calculations, drawings, equipment datasheets, vendor documentation and inspection and test plans.
- Verify compliance with applicable South African legislation, recognised international codes and standards, and project safety requirements.
- Coordinate with process, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and control, civil and structural, and operations disciplines.
- Identify fire protection deficiencies, process safety risks, design deviations and engineering non-conformances.
- Support technical reviews during procurement, construction, installation and commissioning.
- Participate in selected site inspections, equipment testing and commissioning-readiness activities.
- Review emergency response preparedness and operational readiness documentation.
- Maintain technical review registers and track corrective actions through close-out.
- Provide recommendations to engineering management on significant fire protection and process safety risks.
TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide specialist fire protection and process safety engineering expertise.
- Review engineering deliverables and verify compliance within delegated technical authority.
- Assess fire, explosion, toxic or flammable release and escalation risks, as applicable.
- Evaluate the adequacy of fire prevention, detection, mitigation and emergency response measures.
- Identify technical gaps and recommend corrective actions to improve safety and regulatory compliance.
- Support process safety risk management and multidisciplinary design reviews.
- Maintain clear technical documentation and ensure review findings are appropriately recorded.
