Role Overview
The Design & Release Engineer (D&RE) – Interiors is responsible for the end-to-end cradle-to-grave ownership of interior systems and components (e.g., Instrument Panels, Door Trim, Center Consoles, Overhead Systems, or Seats) for upcoming vehicle programs. Based in Toluca, you will manage design feasibility, CAD integration, supplier execution, tooling setup, quality gates, and hands-on plant launch support at manufacturing facilities.
1. Product Design & Technical Ownership
- Lead the engineering design, integration, and release of interior components from concept phase (Phase 0) through launch (SOP) and serial production.
- Ensure designs comply with vehicle packaging requirements, Craftsmanship/Fit & Finish targets, NVH, Safety regulations (e.g., FMVSS/ECE head impact, airbag deployment clearance), and Ergonomics.
- Conduct Design Reviews, 3D clearance/interference analysis, and tolerance stack-up studies using 3D CAD platforms (Catia V5/NX).
- Author and execute DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), DVP&R (Design Verification Plan and Report), and engineering sign-offs.
- Function as the single technical point-of-contact for Tier-1 suppliers regarding interior commodities.
- Manage component delivery milestones through APQP and PPAP processes ( tooling trial reviews, graining sign-offs, color matching, and dimensional validation).
- Track component costs, weight targets, piece-price variances, and tooling timing to ensure alignment with program budgets.
- Support local prototype builds, pilot runs, and ramp-up phases at the manufacturing facility.
- Lead root-cause analysis and resolution for launch-blocking issues using standard problem-solving methodologies (8D, 5-Why, Ishikawa).
- Oversee Engineering Change Requests (ECR/ECO) and implementation in serial life.
Profilo
Education & Technical Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Design, or a related field.
- 3–6+ years of progressive experience as a Design & Release (D&RE) or Component Engineer in the automotive industry, specifically focused on Interior Trim / Cabin Commodities (Plastic injection molding, thermoforming, foam-in-place, leather wrapped/upholstery).
- Demonstrated experience with automotive release systems (PLM software like Teamcenter, Windchill, or Enovia).
- Solid understanding of plastic part design rules (draft angles, wall thickness, rib structures, sink mark prevention) and tooling processes.
- Language Proficiency: Advanced / Fluent English and Spanish (both written and spoken) for daily interaction with global engineering teams and local manufacturing ops.
- Work Arrangement: Hybrid schedule requiring attendance at the Toluca office/plant 3 days a week, with flexibility to increase on-site presence during launch/pilot phases.
- Preferred Qualifications
- 3D CAD Proficiency: Direct working capability in Catia V5/V6 or Siemens NX for surface inspection, packaging validation, and section creation.
- Launch Experience: Direct experience participating in vehicle launches at OEM assembly plants in Mexico.
- Certifications: Six Sigma Green Belt / Black Belt, PMP, or VDA/IATF awareness.
