Mission

POSITION SUMMARY

SEGULA Technologies is seeking an experienced Refrigerated LPG Tank Specialist to provide technical expertise in the engineering, design review, fabrication, inspection and commissioning of refrigerated LPG storage tanks and cryogenic containment systems.

The successful candidate will assess engineering documentation, verify compliance with applicable technical standards, evaluate equipment integrity and support quality assurance throughout the project lifecycle.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review refrigerated LPG tank concepts, design philosophies, design criteria and technical specifications.
  • Assess engineering calculations, drawings, technical reports, datasheets and vendor documentation.
  • Verify compliance with applicable South African regulations, project requirements and recognised international standards.
  • Review tank construction arrangements, including bottom plates, shell structures, roof systems, penetrations and associated components.
  • Assess cryogenic materials selection, insulation systems, thermal performance and structural integrity.
  • Review boil-off gas management interfaces, pressure and vacuum protection, and associated safety provisions.
  • Evaluate tank design provisions for operational safety, maintainability, inspection accessibility and long-term integrity.
  • Review fabrication procedures, welding documentation, inspection and test plans, quality records and technical deviations.
  • Support technical assurance during tank fabrication, installation, preservation, testing and pre-commissioning.
  • Witness or support selected inspections, leak testing and other acceptance activities, as applicable.
  • Review cold-commissioning readiness and cooldown procedures.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces with civil and structural, process, piping, electrical, instrumentation, control and fire protection disciplines.
  • Assess cryogenic foundation interfaces, including thermal protection and settlement monitoring.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews, HAZID, HAZOP, SIL workshops and constructability reviews, where relevant.
  • Maintain technical review registers, comment-resolution records and non-conformance documentation.
  • Identify and escalate technical risks, deviations and quality issues.
  • Support commissioning, start-up and operational handover activities.

TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide specialist mechanical engineering expertise for refrigerated and cryogenic storage systems.
  • Review engineering deliverables and recommend acceptance, rejection or clarification within delegated authority.
  • Identify technical risks, non-conformances and corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction and commissioning teams.
  • Maintain independent technical judgement and ensure review findings are documented and resolved.

Profil

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSc or BEng) – mandatory.
  • Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) – preferred.
  • Training in API 620, API 625 or equivalent refrigerated storage tank standards – preferred.
  • Additional training in cryogenic materials, inspection techniques, welding quality or integrity management – advantageous.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 20 years of relevant mechanical engineering and storage-tank experience.
  • Direct experience with refrigerated LPG tanks, LNG storage tanks or comparable cryogenic containment systems – essential.
  • Demonstrable experience in tank design review, engineering calculations, drawings and technical specifications.
  • Experience in tank fabrication, welding, materials selection, inspection, testing and commissioning assurance.
  • Knowledge of refrigerated tank containment arrangements, insulation systems, foundations and cryogenic service requirements.
  • Experience reviewing vendor documentation, quality plans, inspection and test plans, technical deviations and non-conformances.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering interfaces on major industrial, energy, gas-processing, refinery or petrochemical projects.
  • Previous independent engineering review, technical assurance or inspection experience – strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting construction, pre-commissioning, cold commissioning and operational handover.
