POSITION SUMMARY
SEGULA Technologies is seeking an experienced Senior Civil and Structural Engineer to provide technical expertise in the review, verification and assurance of civil and structural engineering works for major industrial facilities.
The successful candidate will assess engineering calculations, drawings, specifications and technical documentation relating to site development, earthworks, drainage, roads, foundations, reinforced concrete and structural steelwork.
The role also includes reviewing geotechnical assumptions, foundation design, structural integrity, constructability and construction quality, with particular attention to specialist foundation requirements for refrigerated and cryogenic storage tanks.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review civil and structural design criteria, design calculations, specifications, drawings and technical reports.
- Assess site development plans, earthworks, grading, drainage systems, access roads and underground infrastructure.
- Review reinforced concrete structures, structural steelwork, equipment foundations, pipe supports and industrial building structures.
- Assess foundation design, bearing capacity, settlement criteria, structural loads and geotechnical assumptions.
- Review foundation design and settlement considerations for refrigerated LPG and cryogenic storage tanks.
- Ensure that specialist cryogenic tank foundation reviews are undertaken by suitably qualified personnel with relevant experience.
- Assess structural integrity, durability, constructability, maintainability and compliance with applicable design standards.
- Review technical interfaces between civil and structural works and mechanical, piping, process, electrical and instrumentation disciplines.
- Verify compliance with applicable South African regulations, project specifications and recognised international engineering codes and standards.
- Review contractor calculations, technical submissions, material specifications, inspection records and quality documentation.
- Identify design discrepancies, technical risks, non-conformances and potential construction issues.
- Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews, 3D model reviews and constructability assessments.
- Support technical-query resolution and provide recommendations on civil and structural engineering issues.
- Conduct or support selected site inspections and assessments of completed civil and structural works.
- Monitor the resolution of technical comments and maintain engineering review records.
- Support construction, pre-commissioning and handover activities where civil and structural engineering input is required.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering and construction teams to ensure technical consistency and safe execution.
TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide senior-level civil and structural engineering expertise and technical guidance.
- Review and verify engineering deliverables within delegated technical authority.
- Identify structural, geotechnical and construction-related risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Assess compliance with approved design criteria, technical specifications and applicable standards.
- Support constructability, quality assurance and engineering risk-management activities.
- Maintain clear technical documentation and ensure identified issues are tracked through resolution.
Profile
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BSc or BEng) – mandatory.
- Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) – preferred.
- Additional training in industrial foundations, structural design or geotechnical engineering – advantageous.
- Training or specialist knowledge in cryogenic storage tank foundations and settlement assessment – preferred.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 10 years of relevant civil and structural engineering experience in industrial projects.
- Experience in oil and gas, refinery, petrochemical, energy, terminal or other major industrial facilities.
- Demonstrable experience reviewing civil and structural engineering calculations, drawings, specifications and technical submissions.
- Experience with reinforced concrete, structural steelwork, equipment foundations, site development and industrial infrastructure.
- Knowledge of geotechnical investigations, foundation design, bearing capacity and settlement analysis.
- Specific experience in cryogenic or refrigerated storage tank foundations is required for specialist tank-foundation review activities.
- Experience assessing construction quality, constructability, technical deviations and engineering non-conformances.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering interfaces and supporting construction and handover activities.
- Previous independent engineering review, technical assurance or design-checking experience – preferred.
