Mission

ABOUT US:

Segula Technologies Australia is an engineering design consultancy which focuses on the Automotive,  Aerospace, Rail,  Naval/Defence, and infrastructure sectors.  Our local team has more than 15 years of experience in large automotive, defence and mobility infrastructure projects in Australia.  Our strategic partnerships with Australian SMEs form a solid technical front office, supported by Segula’s global expert network.  Segula Technologies Australia is based in Port Melbourne.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

We are seeking an experienced Design Engineer with a strong background in mechanical or structural design engineering, combined with hands-on experience in architectural façades, steel framing, and custom metalwork fabrication.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for translating complex architectural concepts and engineering requirements into practical, cost-effective, and fabrication-ready design solutions. This role requires a strong understanding of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), fabrication processes, structural connections, and coordination with architectural and engineering teams.

For this project, the candidate should have direct experience in façade systems or architectural metalwork fabrication, as well as the ability to redesign complex architectural elements with manufacturing and production considerations in mind.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Translate architectural concepts, engineering drawings, and design intent into practical, manufacturable, and fabrication-ready solutions.
  • Develop detailed designs for architectural façades, steel framing, secondary steelwork, brackets, connections, and custom metalwork.
  • Design and develop curved, freeform, and geometrically complex façade systems.
  • Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles to optimise designs for cost, manufacturability, assembly, and installation.
  • Prepare and develop 3D fabrication models, detailed shop drawings, manufacturing drawings, and installation details.
  • Consider manufacturing processes including CNC laser cutting, folding, rolling, welding, machining, and assembly during the design development process.
  • Coordinate architectural models and designs using Revit and Rhino.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, structural engineers, fabricators, manufacturers, and project stakeholders to resolve design and manufacturing challenges.
  • Review designs for constructability, tolerances, material usage, fabrication feasibility, and installation requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify complex designs while maintaining the required architectural intent, structural integrity, aesthetics, and functionality.
  • Incorporate design feedback and manage revisions through to design approval and fabrication release.
  • Support technical discussions with fabricators and engineering teams to ensure designs can be efficiently manufactured and assembled.
  • Assist in resolving fabrication and site-related design issues where required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience as a Design Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, Structural Design Engineer, Façade Design Engineer, or similar role.
  • Direct experience in architectural façades, architectural metalwork, steel structures, or custom metal fabrication.
  • Strong understanding of DFMA principles and manufacturing-oriented design.
  • Experience designing complex, curved, or geometrically challenging façade systems.
  • Good knowledge of steel framing, secondary steelwork, brackets, connections, and modular assemblies.
  • Experience converting architectural and engineering drawings into fabrication-ready models and shop drawings.
  • Proficiency in Revit and Rhino for design and coordination.
  • Ability to interpret and work with architectural, structural, and engineering drawings.
  • Experience working directly with fabricators and manufacturing teams is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of design tolerances, material selection, fabrication constraints, and assembly requirements.
